Meet Our June Business of the Month

The Woburn Chamber of Commerce announces its June Business of the Month. Family Dinner located on New Boston Street. They are a local farmer’s market delivery service. Each week they source local meat, fish, produce and grains and deliver right to their customers doors anywhere in the 495 belt. They are a 100% woman owned business and proud to be based in Woburn.

Each month they donate over $3,000 in product to local food banks to help address food insecurity in the communities. They are honored to partner with the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Chelsea Collaborative and the Woburn Food Pantry in this effort. Congratulations to our Business of the Year

We are proud to be presenting the Boys & Girls Club of Woburn with the 2020 Business of the Year Award. In a year full of unprecedented challenges, The Club responded with grace to continue their important work of supporting the youth of the city.

The James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn has been serving youth and families in Woburn and the surrounding communities for more than 55 years. Typically, the Club offers recreational, character building, and educational opportunities for kids & teens afterschool. In March, the COVID-19 public health crisis forced the closure of their facility and programs. Quickly, the organization pivoted to provide critical support for families. They created a virtual Clubhouse where kids could socialize with their friends and mentors, delivered food and other necessities to doorsteps of those in need, and made weekly phone calls to others to make sure that all of their “Club kids” were safe and healthy.

Currently, the Club has partnered with Woburn Public Schools and Mayor Scott Galvin to provide a supervised learning environment for students on their remote learning days. The Clubhouse serves as a safe haven for youth who might otherwise be home alone or disengaged from their education. James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn has always been committed to doing “whatever it takes” to help the kids & teens in our community.

Update on City of Woburn Bag Ban

Woburn Ordinance to Reduce Plastic Bag Use Now in Effect

As of September 30, 2020, Woburn’s retailers are restricted from using single-use plastic bags for shoppers’ purchases.  Woburn is one of more than 130 cities and towns in Massachusetts to enact this legislation.

The purpose of the ordinance, formally called Reduction of Checkout Bags by Retail Establishments (Title 8, Article IV of the 1989 Municipal Code), is “to protect the aesthetic beauty of the City of Woburn as well as the natural resources of the City by reducing the use of single-use plastic bags that are being used, discarded, and/or littered, to reduce solid waste, to protect the environment, both terrestrial and marine, and water resources, and to promote the use of reusable bags and recyclable paper bags by retail establishments in the City of Woburn.”

The ban specifically requires that any bag provided by a retailer must be compostable, reusable, or if made of plastic must be greater than 3 mils thick (approximately the thickness of 3 sheets of paper).  This ban does not eliminate the use of dry-cleaning bags, bags for newspapers, or bags used in the produce section of supermarkets; nor does it exclude retailers from selling plastic bags for garbage or pet waste.  Craft and fair vendors are not considered retailers under this ordinance and are excluded.  The Health Inspector will enforce this ordinance and retailers can be fined $50 for the first offence and $100 for the second and each subsequent offence.  Retailers may apply for an exemption for particular reasons with the approval of the Health Inspector.
