Tocci Building Corp has been selected by the Board of the Woburn Chamber of Commerce as their 2018 Business of the Year. Tocci is an exceptional presence in the community in many ways. Their preservation and restoration of the historic Gustavino Tile Factory demonstrates their appreciation for the architecture and history of the building and is a true hidden gem in the city. Their emphasis on community, both internally within the company and as they extend in the communities they touch, is profound. Community is integral to who Tocci is as a corporation whether that is hosting in house wellness activities, sharing CSA vegetables among their employees or seeking ways to support the communities in which they build, live and value.
On the outside, Tocci Building Corporation is a Construction Management company known for driving a smart building process using lean and virtual construction techniques. We continuously fine-tune best lean and virtual construction practices through on-the-job application and in-house workshops. Our private and public commercial, institutional and residential work reflects our commitment to work built on intelligence and with quality.
You can see our work throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic; in cities like Boston, MA, Providence, RI, Stamford, CT and Jersey City, NJ. What is harder to see, is who we are on the inside. Inside, we are so much more. Tocci believes that a good, cohesive team is fueled by more than industry smarts, savvy and skill. A layer of glue is required to unite team in camaraderie and commitment to excellence. At Tocci that glue is a focus on supporting the social, health and philanthropic needs of each Tocci employee.
When you work at Tocci, you quickly come to know the twin pillars of our company: Mr. + Mrs. John and Lila Tocci. They are the foundation on which we build buildings and a satisfying corporate culture. John, The CEO of the company is tough, fair, hardworking, and straight forward. It should also be noted that John has a contagious smile and is quick to laugh. Lila, Director of Company Life and Charitable Giving, is our go-to moral compass, compassionate leader, giver of sage advice whose door is always open. These two individuals exemplify the core of Tocci: a source of innovative forceful ideas yet deeply relational.
Tocci attracts people who share these values.
GIVING
As a company and individually, we donate our time, funds, and other resources to local and international charities. Tocci offers employees specific opportunities to give back through Service Grants, which match donations to a cause of choice, and Volunteer Days, which give time off for a day of service. Tocci projects often include a component of service for the communities we build in.
Within the past two years Tocci has accomplished some amazing feats.
The Buddy Run: For several years Tocci has teamed up with the Buffalo Soldiers, a motorcycle club for people of color, to support Boston Medical Center’s SPARK (Supporting Parents and Resilient Kids) Center, a medically-therapeutic child care facility providing integrated services to children and their families. SPARK provides medical care, nutritious meals with family style love, on top of meeting educational and developmental needs. Tocci is the primary corporate sponsor of the Buddy Run.
Support for Syrian Refugees: Last year, Marvin Lahoud, Project Performance Manager, joined Tocci from Mansourieh, Lebanon. During a lunch and learn Marvin described his Lebanese church’s work assisting hundreds of Syrian refugees. To start a program serving special needs children at their center in Lebanon Tocci raised over $10,000.
Pints for Half Pints: Tocci hosted it’s fourth Pints for Half Pints Blood Drive with Boston Children’s Hospital. With the help of our employees, local businesses (Manganaro, Nardone Electric, JC Floorcovering, BioProcure), and volunteers from the community, we were able to surpass our previous year’s donation and give 37 pints of blood – enough to help over 140 children!
Habitat Boston Orgill: Orgill, a home show extravaganza at the Boston Expo Center in the Seaport District, raised $50,000 to help Habitat Boston build housing and create a pathway to home ownership. Volunteers load and shrink-wrap pallets with donated goods for Habitat to sell in their ReStore.
Packing up donations gives the Tocci teams an opportunity for team building and creative problem solving
More Than Words: Tocci collected books for the non-profit More Than Words (MTW). At More Than Words, at risk youth run two bookstores, a café, and an online bookselling business where they gain critical life skills and resume-building experience. Tocci donated over 200 books to the Waltham facility.
Sojourner House: Tocci Superintendent Matt Neel coordinated a collection of back to school items on his Providence job site in August. Our home office at 660 Main St. pitched in as well to supply children in Sojourner House, a shelter for women in domestic abuse, with necessities like back packs, notebooks, binders, pens and markers.
Service Grants were given to Communications Director Amy Thompson West to match her fundraising for a regional Alzheimer’s Walk, and the Planning + Cost Engineering Dept. for a volunteer day at Cradles to Crayons.
WELLNESS & SAFETY
Tocci’s Wellness Program encourages staff to eat better, exercise more and stress less. Offering on-site fitness classes, healthy options vending, and weekly wellness tips coupled with executive-level participation has garnered awards from WorkWell MA, the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association.
Safety: Tocci has a full time Safety Director who monitors compliance on our jobsites and home office. He oversees training and orientation of new work phases. For several years Tocci has received the Associated General Contractors Safety Award.
SOCIAL
Culture: Believing communication is an essential for creating a cohesive culture, Tocci meets every other month for Staff Meetings and brief Touchbases on the off months. We produce a monthly in-house newsletter with project updates, corporate and HR info, as well as personal events. A themed quarterly social hour and seasonal brew in the afterhours kegerator adds some fun to the mix.
Our people are talented builders and, just as importantly, connected, giving and health-conscience folks. That’s why we are an engaged and effective team!
Please join us at our Annual Celebration on November 7th and help us celebrate community and Tocci’s commitment to excellence.
