Community Health Initiative Grant – Request for Proposal!

Winchester Hospital and Shields MRI recently submitted a joint application to the Department of Public Health to place an MRI unit onsite at Winchester Hospital. As part of the Determination of Need (DoN) process, Winchester Hospital has a unique opportunity to engage in a new program called the Community Health Initiative (CHI). The goal of the CHI is to:

collaborate with community partners to identify and address the unmet priority health needs in the community while considering the social determinants of health; the conditions where people live, work and play that influence health outcomes. A CHI workgroup, comprised of community partners with a regional focus, worked together to prioritize the unmet health needs and health inequities in the community and determine allocation of the funding.

As part of this process,  WH collaborated with community partners with a regional and broad focus on health for the past several months to develop the attached RFP.

Winchester Hospital CHI Grant.

Funding in various denominations will be awarded as a one-time Grant for programs/initiatives that are implemented between February 2019 – February 2020.

Please note, priority consideration will be given to programs or services that:

  1. Most closely align with the identified health needs/issues listed in the RFP
  2. Address the social determinants of health and/or root causes of the health disparities
  3. Project clear goals and measurable health outcomes/impact
  4. Include collaboration between community partners/organizations

SCI Recruiting Volunteers to Help Seniors With Leaf Raking

leaf raking
“SCI Recruiting Volunteers to Help Seniors With Leaf Raking,” by Katie Russo, Woburn Patch

Social Capital Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit organization based in Woburn is currently seeking volunteers for their ongoing project Woburn Volunteers for Seniors. This project will match handicapped and isolated seniors with local volunteers, who will assist them in various outdoor chores such as leaf removal and snow shoveling. Volunteers will also be on call in case of sudden heavy snowfall that could otherwise leave many seniors home bound. SCI will collaborate with the Woburn Senior Center and Woburn Council on Aging for the project.

SCI is currently seeking volunteers of all ages to help with leaf raking for seniors throughout the community. Volunteers can be paired with a senior at any time that works for their schedule. In addition to this ongoing effort, we will be holding two group raking days on Wednesday, October 25 (a half day for Woburn students) and Veterans Day (observed) on Friday, November 10. If interested in volunteering, please contact Katie Russo at krusso@socialcapitalinc.org.

[gdlr_heading tag=”h2″ font_weight=”bold” ]How did leaf raking for seniors get started?[/gdlr_heading]

The idea for Woburn Volunteers for Seniors was born in the now-infamous winter of 2014-2015, when Massachusetts received record snow accumulation. During a meeting with Judy Tanner of the Woburn Senior Center, SCI president David Crowley learned of several seniors affected by the storms. In addition to being trapped in their homes, many were unable to clear external vents. This left them vulnerable to dangerous carbon monoxide buildups. David and his SCI team quickly mobilized a group of volunteers to provide emergency assistance to over a dozen seniors.

“We were pleased to be able to recruit volunteers to help following a major blizzard,” commented Crowley. “But the situation also pointed out the need to develop a more systematic way to support seniors who might be in need of assistance. We have also expanded the scope of the volunteers’ efforts to include helping seniors with leaf raking.”

[gdlr_heading tag=”h2″ font_weight=”bold” ]Waht is SCI’s Mission?[/gdlr_heading]

The mission of SCI Social Capital Inc. is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. Since 2002, SCI has been developing social capitalists. These individuals reach across differences to mobilize neighbors and volunteers to strengthen our communities. SCI projects in 20 Massachusetts communities include youth-led campaigns to promote healthy eating and exercise, community web portals and e-newsletters to connect people to civic information; multicultural events; neighborhood gatherings and resident-led community problem solving.

We are proud to honor SCI with our 2018 Humanitarian Award.

Tocci Building Corp

Tocci Building Corp has been selected by the Board of the Woburn Chamber of Commerce as their 2018 Business of the Year. Tocci is an exceptional presence in the community in many ways. Their preservation and restoration of the historic Gustavino Tile Factory demonstrates their appreciation for the architecture and history of the building and is a true hidden gem in the city. Their emphasis on community, both internally within the company and as they extend in the communities they touch, is profound. Community is integral to who Tocci is as a corporation whether that is hosting in house wellness activities, sharing CSA vegetables among their employees or seeking ways to support the communities in which they build, live and value.

Why Tocci Building Corp is recognized as our Business of the Year

On the outside, Tocci Building Corporation is a Construction Management company known for driving a smart building process using lean and virtual construction techniques. We continuously fine-tune best lean and virtual construction practices through on-the-job application and in-house workshops. Our private and public commercial, institutional and residential work reflects our commitment to work built on intelligence and with quality.

You can see our work throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic; in cities like Boston, MA, Providence, RI, Stamford, CT and Jersey City, NJ. What is harder to see, is who we are on the inside. Inside, we are so much more. Tocci believes that a good, cohesive team is fueled by more than industry smarts, savvy and skill. A layer of glue is required to unite team in camaraderie and commitment to excellence. At Tocci that glue is a focus on supporting the social, health and philanthropic needs of each Tocci employee.

When you work at Tocci, you quickly come to know the twin pillars of our company: Mr. + Mrs.  John and Lila Tocci. They are the foundation on which we build buildings and a satisfying corporate culture. John, The CEO of the company is tough, fair, hardworking, and straight forward. It should also be noted that John has a contagious smile and is quick to laugh. Lila, Director of Company Life and Charitable Giving, is our go-to moral compass, compassionate leader, giver of sage advice whose door is always open. These two individuals exemplify the core of Tocci: a source of innovative forceful ideas yet deeply relational.

Tocci attracts people who share these values.

GIVING

As a company and individually, we donate our time, funds, and other resources to local and international charities. Tocci offers employees specific opportunities to give back through Service Grants, which match donations to a cause of choice, and Volunteer Days, which give time off for a day of service. Tocci projects often include a component of service for the communities we build in.

Within the past two years Tocci has accomplished some amazing feats.

The Buddy Run: For several years Tocci has teamed up with the Buffalo Soldiers, a motorcycle club for people of color, to support Boston Medical Center’s SPARK (Supporting Parents and Resilient Kids) Center, a medically-therapeutic child care facility providing integrated services to children and their families. SPARK provides medical care, nutritious meals with family style love, on top of meeting educational and developmental needs. Tocci is the primary corporate sponsor of the Buddy Run.

Support for Syrian Refugees: Last year, Marvin Lahoud, Project Performance Manager, joined Tocci from Mansourieh, Lebanon. During a lunch and learn Marvin described his Lebanese church’s work assisting hundreds of Syrian refugees. To start a program serving special needs children at their center in Lebanon Tocci raised over $10,000.

Pints for Half Pints: Tocci hosted it’s fourth Pints for Half Pints Blood Drive with Boston Children’s Hospital. With the help of our employees, local businesses (ManganaroNardone ElectricJC FloorcoveringBioProcure), and volunteers from the community, we were able to surpass our previous year’s donation and give 37 pints of blood – enough to help over 140 children!

Habitat Boston Orgill: Orgill, a home show extravaganza at the Boston Expo Center in the Seaport District, raised $50,000 to help Habitat Boston build housing and create a pathway to home ownership. Volunteers load and shrink-wrap pallets with donated goods for Habitat to sell in their ReStore.
Packing up donations gives the Tocci teams an opportunity for team building and creative problem solving

More Than Words:  Tocci collected books for the non-profit More Than Words (MTW). At More Than Words, at risk youth run two bookstores, a café, and an online bookselling business where they gain critical life skills and resume-building experience. Tocci donated over 200 books to the Waltham facility.

Sojourner House: Tocci Superintendent Matt Neel coordinated a collection of back to school items on his Providence job site in August.  Our home office at 660 Main St. pitched in as well to supply children in Sojourner House, a shelter for women in domestic abuse, with necessities like back packs, notebooks, binders, pens and markers.

Service Grants were given to Communications Director Amy Thompson West to match her fundraising for a regional Alzheimer’s Walk, and the Planning + Cost Engineering Dept. for a volunteer day at Cradles to Crayons.

WELLNESS & SAFETY

Tocci’s Wellness Program encourages staff to eat better, exercise more and stress less.  Offering on-site fitness classes, healthy options vending, and weekly wellness tips coupled with executive-level participation has garnered awards from WorkWell MA, the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association.

Safety: Tocci has a full time Safety Director who monitors compliance on our jobsites and home office.  He oversees training and orientation of new work phases. For several years Tocci has received the Associated General Contractors Safety Award.

SOCIAL

Culture: Believing communication is an essential for creating a cohesive culture, Tocci meets every other month for Staff Meetings and brief Touchbases on the off months.  We produce a monthly in-house newsletter with project updates, corporate and HR info, as well as personal events. A themed quarterly social hour and seasonal brew in the afterhours kegerator adds some fun to the mix.

Our people are talented builders and, just as importantly, connected, giving and health-conscience folks. That’s why we are an engaged and effective team!

Please join us at our Annual Celebration on November 7th and help us celebrate community and Tocci’s commitment to excellence.

SCI’s mission is:

To strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives.  We envision a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of their communities. This increase in ‘social capital’ will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital.

Social Capital Inc. exemplifies our 2018 theme of “The Value of Community”

What is Social Capital Exactly?

The collective value of all ‘social networks’ [who people know] and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other [norms of reciprocity]. (www.bowlingalone.com)

Social capital is one of the most powerful predictors of outcomes for individuals and communities. Strong networks of trusting relationships and an inclination of citizens to participate provide a context in which other community priorities can be addressed effectively. The amount of social capital in a community is directly linked to educational outcomes, crime rates, and economic prosperity. For instance, Professor Robert Putnam shows through rigorous statistical analysis that, “The correlation between high social capital and positive child development is as close to perfect as social scientists ever find…Across the various Kids Count indicators, social capital is second only to poverty in the breadth and depth of its effects on children’s lives.” (Bowling Alone p.296-297).

How Does SCI Build Social Capital?

For 15 years, SCI has been increasing social capital and community engagement in Eastern Massachusetts communities.  In the process, SCI has developed tools, program models, trainings and other resources to help communities boost their social capital and thus better tackle issues of concern. (They) are actively seeking organizations and communities that would like to partner with SCI and leverage (their) social capital building expertise to address pressing issues such as health & wellness, youth success and economic development.
